Founded 1965
In 1965, Ted Johnson moved to California to launch his propane company. Starting from his home in the San Gabriel Valley, he built the business with just one truck, one employee, and a newborn daughter by his side.
1972: A New Home in Baldwin Park
In 1972, Ted Johnson relocated the company from his home office to a newly purchased property in Baldwin Park, where he constructed a dedicated office building and installed two 30,000-gallon propane storage tanks.
1981: A New Era of Innovation
In 1981, Julie Johnson joined the family business, bringing fresh energy and forward-thinking ideas. Under her leadership, the company transitioned from handwritten route cards, mailed invoices, and adding machines to fully computerized systems - first in the office, then in the delivery trucks.
1983–1993: Modernization and Expansion
In 1983, the company installed its first Wang/FuelPak computer system to manage routes, billing, and general ledger operations. Converting from an all-paper office to a computerized system was a major milestone.
Over the following decade, Ted Johnson Propane steadily grew to serve more than 900 customers across six delivery routes. Facility expansion became essential year after year. The company acquired and developed additional property on Arrow Highway, increased storage capacity to 150,000 gallons, and built a 4,000-square-foot multi-purpose warehouse with mechanic bays and a fabrication shop.
2000: Strengthening Our Supply Chain
In 2000, Ted Johnson Propane purchased its first transport truck, allowing the company to pick up propane directly from local refineries. This strategic move improved supply reliability, increased efficiency, and enhanced the company’s ability to serve customers on its own terms.
2009: A Legacy Continued
In 2009, company founder Ted Johnson passed away, leaving behind a legacy of innovation and dedication to customer service. Julie Johnson, representing the second generation of leadership, stepped forward as President to continue guiding the company with the same values and commitment to excellence.
2015: Celebrating 50 Years of Service
In 2015, Ted Johnson Propane proudly marked its 50th year in business. This milestone celebrated half a century of providing safe, reliable propane solutions and outstanding customer service to communities across Southern California.
2025: Looking Ahead With Renewable Propane
In 2025, Ted Johnson Propane took the next step toward sustainability by introducing renewable propane to its customers. This cleaner, low-carbon energy option supports a greener future while maintaining the same dependable performance and service that communities across Southern California have trusted for decades.
Today: Reaching New Milestones
Today, Ted Johnson Propane operates with 500,000 gallons of storage capacity, a state-of-the-art autogas center, a tank recertification shop, a warehouse, a full-service department, transport capabilities, and a large fleet of delivery trucks to serve our growing community.

Ted Johnson was a true visionary, setting high standards for safety long before formal regulations existed. When he designed our office and storage facilities, he built them with the future in mind. Choosing a location with freeway access to reach all of Southern California was no coincidence.
Our journey has not always been easy. We have weathered economic downturns and faced strong competition. Through hard work and the core values that define us, we have continued to overcome every challenge.
